Plain-language guide
How NDIS funding works.
Three budgets, three ways a plan is managed, and where we fit. No acronym is used before it's explained.
The three budgets in every plan
Which budget a support comes from decides how flexibly you can spend it.
Everyday help
Core Supports
Personal care, help around the house, getting out into the community, respite stays, transport. The most flexible budget: funds usually move between these as your week changes.
Building skills
Capacity Building
Therapy, learning daily living skills, employment help, support coordination. Not flexible: each category can only be spent on that category.
Equipment and environments
Capital Supports
Assistive technology like wheelchairs and communication devices, home modifications, Specialist Disability Accommodation. Usually tied to specific quotes and approvals.
Three ways a plan is managed
Separate from the budgets. This decides which providers you can use, and it's the one that matters for us.
Self-managed
You hold the money, pay providers, and claim it back. Most freedom: any provider you trust, registered or not.
We can support you
Plan-managed
A plan manager pays invoices and tracks the budget for you. You still choose any provider, registered or not.
We can support you
NDIA-managed
The Agency pays providers directly, and can only pay providers registered with the NDIS Commission.
Not yet, but we'll point you to a registered provider
How to check your own plan
- Look at the "How your plan is managed" section of your plan document, or ask the person who helped set it up.
- Check the my NDIS app or the myplace participant portal.
- Still unsure? Ask us. Checking costs nothing and you won't be signed up to anything.
